Summer and we are back in Kurchatov – the annual summer school “Young Physicist” from the Park of Nuclear Technologies and the National Nuclear Center of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and this is: the lecture “Peaceful Atom”, acquaintance with the work of young specialists and equipment of the leading enterprises of the nuclear industry of Kazakhstan.

The school students got acquainted with the Kazakhstani product that preserves moisture for plants, which is so necessary today in crop production in rural areas and urban landscaping - a superabsorbent with a water absorption coefficient of 300!

It is obtained as a result of radiation cross-linking of polymer composition at the ILU-10 electron accelerator. Water absorption capacity of 1 gram of superabsorbent is up to 300 ml of water. The superabsorbent is completely safe for plants and humans.

When using superabsorbent, the soil retains moisture longer, and therefore the amount of water required for irrigation can be significantly reduced. Due to the increase in size when water is absorbed, superabsorbent granules create a “hydraulic fracture”, which increases the porosity of the soil, and this has a beneficial effect on providing oxygen to the root system of plants. After 5 years, the sorbent breaks down into mineral components consumed by the plants themselves.

Many THANKS to colleagues for the opportunity to participate in the summer school “Young Physicist” and a tour of the the Park of Nuclear Technologies.
