The Workshop “Environmental Safety”, dedicated to the problems of safety of people and the environment was held in Almaty on September 3-4. The workshop was organized by the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan (PKC) jointly with Al-Farabi Kazakh National University under support of the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan (KNS).

The problems of environmental safety have become global by the end of the twentieth century. These include the changes in the Earth’s climate, air contamination, land pollution, reduced crop yields, depletion of drinking water and water resources, impoverishment of biological diversity, etc. These problems are largely the result of human production activities, which led to a significant change in the Earth’s ecosystem.

At the Workshop the lectures were provided for the students by the leading scientists of the country on various environmental safety issues. Head of the Laboratory of Environmental Engineering at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Makarova Varvara provided the presentation “Activities of the Institute of Nuclear Physics in radioecology” at the Workshop.

In addition, the participants of the Workshop visited the Institute of Nuclear Physics, and could see the main scientific departments and production facilities of the enterprise.
