The International Conference “Security of Radioactive Materials: The Way Forward for Prevention and Detection” took place on December 3-7, 2018 at the IAEA (Vienna, Austria).

About 550 representatives from more than 100 countries took part in the Conference.

The purpose of this IAEA conference is to facilitate the exchange of experience in provision of radioactive materials security, state regulatory control during their use, transportation and storage, as well as the measures to detect any material being out of control.

The conference program included the plenary sessions, technical sessions, poster and interactive reports, exhibitions. Each thematic session included the reports and presentations, as well as a further review during the panel discussions.

The conference addressed the issues of radioactive materials security, regulatory requirements for radiation safety in the use, storage and transportation of the sources, strengthening of sustainability and effectiveness of the nuclear security regime. Inadequate storage conditions and low nuclear safety standards threaten the environment and increase the probability of unauthorized use of nuclear and radioactive materials.

During the conference, the representatives of the IAEA Member States shared their experiences, including the difficulties encountered in fulfilling the commitments on radioactive materials security. Practically in all presentations, the participants drew attention to the need for personnel training to fulfill the tasks facing the countries in radioactive materials security.

At the technical session “Human Resource Development”, the INP specialists presented the report “Security of Radioactive Material in Nuclear Security Training Programmes in Kazakhstan”.

Such events-forums is a good opportunity to exchange the experiences and to establish contacts with the international organizations and specialists from different countries in order to strengthen and enhance the effectiveness of the national nuclear security.
