The International Workshop on “Radiation Safety and Radioactive Wastes Management» Project of Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA) was held in Almaty on October 4-6, 2016. Specialists from FNCA member-countries: Bangladesh, Indonesia, China, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Thailand and Japan took part in the workshop. The workshop was organized by the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT).

Over a period of three days the issues concerning nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and management of low-level and medium level RW in disposal areas for long term storage in all member-countries were considered in terms of progress, improvements and plans for the future.

In their addresses, Project Coordinator – Toshiso Kosako, Honorary Professor of Tokyo University and FNCA Kazakhstan Coordinator – Erlan Batyrbekov- Director General of RSE NNC RK emphasized the importance of problems under consideration and pointed the positive effect of FNCA on the further improvement of public safety in member-countries as well as international cooperation development.

During the workshop, open meeting with participation of Institute’s specialists was held in the Institute of Nuclear Physics. The reports highlighting experience of member-countries concerning radiation safety and RW management were made there by representatives from Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Japan. Besides, the report on personnel training in the field of nuclear industry and internship opportunities for foreign specialists in Japan was made by member of Nuclear Safety Research Association. In order to cover all issues considered the active and fruitful discussions were held.
