Yukiya Amano headed the IAEA * in 2009, before that he was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Japan to the agency.
The diplomat also served in the United Nations (UN), since 1972 he held various posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

He specialized in the subject of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
