The sixth annual meeting of the “Regional Advisory Safety Committee for research reactors in Asia and the Pacific (RASCAP)” was hosted by Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), USA during the period from 1 October to 5 October 2018. The meeting was conducted under the safety management of research reactors, Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN), IAEA. Kazakhstan is the member of ANSN since 2011.

RASCAP was established in March 2013 with the assistance of IAEA to provide a forum for fostering networking and regional cooperation, and for facilitating use of competencies in the region to cover specific safety issues in research reactors. The RASCAP charter was adopted with the participation of the Member States operating research reactors in Asia and the Pacific Region during a dedicated meeting held in Vienna, 11-15 March 2013.

Similar to the regional advisory groups recently established in Africa and Europe with IAEA assistance, RASCAP is aimed at enhancing the safety of research reactors in the Asia and the Pacific and acts mainly as an advisory group to provide advice on important safety issues concerning the research reactors in the region and to strengthen the effectiveness of the operating organizations’ safety committees. These regional committees meet annually to discuss the safety issues of research reactors that are of common interest. The objective of these meetings is to provide a forum for the exchange of information, sharing knowledge and experiences among the participating Member States on the safety issues of relevance to research reactors within the Asia and the Pacific.

The 6th Annual Meeting of the Regional Advisory Safety Committee for research reactors in Asia and the Pacific (RASCAP) was attended by 16 participants from 11 Member States of the IAEA and the Asia Nuclear Safety Network (Australia, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Republic of; Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam). Most participants were senior members of their organizations and members of their respective research reactor safety committees. IAEA representative Mr. Deshraju Rao (RRSS/NSNI), and IAEA Expert Mr L. Walter Deitrich (ANL) also participated in the meeting.

Murat Tulegenov, Deputy Chief Engineer on Safety of the WWR-K research reactor complex, took part in this RASCAP Annual Meeting. He is a RASCAP Contact Point.
