On November 2 of the current year, the annual meeting of the working group on the application of IAEA safeguards was held in the Republic of Kazakhstan with the participation of representatives of the IAEA Safeguards Department, National Atomic Company Kazatomprom JSC, Ulbinskiy Metallurgical Plant JSC, National Nuclear Center RSE, Institute of Atomic Energy branch of the National Nuclear Center RSE, Ulba-TVS LLP and employees of the Atomic and Energy Supervision and Control Committee, Department of Atomic and Energy industry of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

During the meeting, issues related to further plans of the development of the nuclear fuel cycle in Kazakhstan, an overview of activities in the territory of the former nuclear test sites and issues of transferring equipment for IAEA safeguards inspections to the IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank were discussed.

One of the important events was the statements of the representatives of the IAEA about the beginning of safeguards application for Kazakhstan at the state level from November 1, 2017. This statement confirms that the Republic of Kazakhstan is going through all the necessary procedures for verifying the safeguards application on the basis of which the IAEA makes a conclusion that there is no switching of the nuclear material claimed by the Republic of Kazakhstan and no undeclared nuclear material and nuclear activities in the country.

The meeting of the working group on the application of IAEA safeguards in the Republic of Kazakhstan is an annual event and is aimed at discussing the issues and difficulties that have arisen over the past period, as well as their joint solution and the development of the work plan for the next year.
